James A. Tallon and Tallon Lumber, Inc. in 1958
1958 Graduated from Paul Smith College with AAS Degree in forestry. From school went to work at Cookson Lumber in Southfield, Massachusetts until 1961. 1961-1969 worked at Great Mountain Forest in Norfolk, CT. In charge of setting up and running a sawmill and planing operation.
On January 1, 1970 Tallon Lumber was established in Norfolk, CT. Starting out with used equipment and one employee we sold rough lumber mainly to industrial manufacturers.
In fall of 1971 we purchased a new automatic sawmill and increased production substantially and added employees. By 1979 market conditions changed and required lumber to be surfaced. Zoning would not allow this in Norfolk so we purchased acreage on Route 7 in Canaan where we are located today. We have added dry kilns and a manufacturing department as well as a beautiful showroom. We also started installation and finishing of flooring, as an added service.
Our main production is still industrial and wholesale accounts with some export to Canada. We start with the log, saw the lumber, dry the lumber and turn it into a finished product. We have put our focus on selling more products and service direct to the consumer. We now have 22 employees. Three of which are family.
Tim runs the logging operation and has a Timber Harvesting License in Connecticut. He takes the required continuing education courses provided. Mike manages the yard/sawmill with the responsibility to maintain the log inventory and production of lumber. Brion manages the flooring end of the business and is also our floor installer/finisher. He has taken numerous courses run by the National Flooring Association to keep up with the latest professional training. He is also the company Vice President and a National Wood Flooring Inspector.
